The hammer fell at $36,000 for this 2004 VW Phaeton W12.
This 2004 Volkswagen Phaeton was sold new by Riverside Volkswagen in California and was recently acquired from its original owner with just under 7,600 miles. Finished in Black Klavierlack over Sonnen Beige, the car is equipped with a 6.0-liter W12 mated to a 5-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission sending power to a 4Motion all-wheel drive system. Factory equipment includes a Comfort and Cold Weather Package featuring heated and ventilated seats with massage functionality, electronic parking assist, auto-leveling air suspension, sun shades, and more. This pristine Phaeton is offered with a window sticker, the original books, three keys, an accident-free Carfax report, and a clean California title.
The Phaeton was the anti-VW. This leather-loaded 6.0 W12 was certainly not designed to be “The People’s Car.” When this car was launched many could not get their head around a six-figure Volkswagen. The Phaeton was a great car in its own right but failed miserably in the marketplace. The giant VW cannibalized the sales of the flagship Audi A8 and confused the consumer.
This Phaeton is an interesting car that is in museum condition, but its not a car to drive. Maintainence on this vehicle is nearly impossible given most VW dealerships will no longer work on the Phaeton. This is a very complex vehicle and time will not be kind to all the elecronics, servos, motors, and gears—let alone a complex W12 powerplant. While the Phaeton is a historic car for VW and could be a great conversation piece, owning and maintaining one is another story. The most likely outcome for this Phaeton is further “Chinese water torture” depreciation. Interesting car. Interesting history. Great example. Well sold.
