The SCM Monterey issue is about to hit the newsstands. The hard copy arrived in my mailbox today. The quality of this venerable publication is just going higher and higher. The SCM team works tirelessly to produce a first-class magazine that is accurate and well edited. The coverage of all the activities of Monterey is […]
“Rain, I don’t mind Shine, the weather’s fine” —The Beatles, Rain The Radnor Concours has emerged as one of the leading car shows in the Northeast. The event takes place at the prestigious Radnor Hunt Club on the Main Line of Philadelphia. While this year was soggy, the rain did not dampen the quality of […]
Pebble Beach 2018 is in the rearview mirror. History was made as the 1962 Ferrari GTO sold for $48.5 million. The fabulous week-long car event is an overwhelming endurance marathon. I flew out on Wednesday evening and took several business meetings in San Francisco on Thursday. I drove down to Monterey late Thursday and made […]
For true car enthusiasts, the dog days of summer ultimately conclude with a pilgrimage to Northern California. Since its inception in 1950, Pebble Beach has evolved into a sacred week-long event. This venerable show occurs annually during the third week of August and culminates on Sunday afternoon at the famous 18th-hole of the Pebble Beach […]
At the 2018 Greenwich Concours d’Elegance, Dr. Fred Simeone and Philip Richter were interviewed by Alexander Davidis for CarCulture.tv. These two unusual video interviews articulate the passion of the car hobby and the importance of the automobile as an artistic and cultural object. Cars can be an expression of art and should be carefully preserved […]
I’ve attended the Greenwich Concours for over fifteen years and by all accounts this year represented the high water mark. For 2018, the show had all the attributes of a successful Concours d’Elegance: interesting people, breathtaking cars, decent weather and a beautiful venue on Long Island Sound. Festivities began on Friday morning with a vintage […]
“Demography is destiny.” —Auguste Comte, French sociologist On Saturday I made my annual pilgrimage to the South Florida Fairgrounds to take in all the fun at the Barrett-Jackson car auction. This year’s successful formula was identical to last year—and the year before that. Rows of cars under tents. Hot dogs and beer. One Barrett-Jackson merchandise store after […]
This morning I headed south from Wellington and spent the day at the Boca Raton Concours d’ Elegance. The annual event is held at the Boca Raton Resort & Club and is now in its 12th year. I attended the show several years ago when it was a small and simple affair. Founders Rick and […]
The Western Wall, Bethlehem, Mecca, and Scottsdale are all holy places. My first pilgrimage to the Arizona desert auctions converted me to a believer. My 48-hour trip was a transcendental experience—it was short but unforgettable. The auction events at Scottsdale are sprawled out and scattered across town. If you replace the ocean with desert, events […]
Scottsdale is the must-attend kick-off event for the collector car year. Barrett-Jackson, Gooding & Company, and RM Sotheby’s will be auctioning thousands of fine automobiles. I have been invited by Sports Car Market’s Keith Martin to participate in his Insider’s Seminar panel. I will be joined by an esteemed group of industry experts including Carl Bomstead, […]
On Sunday I attended the Katonah car show. Hosted by the Lions Club of Bedford Hills, the event has been held annually for the last nineteen years. It’s a wonderful low-key gathering that takes place in the Metro-North commuter parking lot. It’s not a show about elite judging standards or 100-point cars. Rather it’s about […]
