SCM Double Take With Somer Hooker

“A change will do you good.”

—Sheryl Crow

Sports Car Market is the premier source for enthusiasts to gather reliable collector car information. The magazine has proactively evolved over the years and is now the friendly, fun, but authoritative voice on industry trends. Content is predominately provided by key industry insiders, giving the publication an accurate, unique, and legitimate perspective. Most of the articles are thoughtful and carefully written from an expert perspective. SCM is more of an organic public good than it is a profit-seeking magazine. The collector car world relies on SCM’s writers and advertisers to provide readers with a consistent and trustworthy focal point of reliable information. Recently, there have been some positive changes at SCM. There are now several new creative column formats that engage readers in diverse topics from novel perspectives. One new SCM article format is “Double Take.” In the January 2021 issue, there is a writer face off with four affordable convertibles from recent Bring a Trailer auctions. In the article below, I face off against renowned expert Somer Hooker.

A word on Somer. He has been involved in the collector world for decades. He is the author of articles and commentary in Cycle World, Sports Car Market, Cycle Trader, Gizmag, Forbes, CNBC, and more. He has also served as Chief Judge at The Quail Gathering among other top rated shows. Today, Somer serves an international clientele of motorcycle collectors searching for rare Broughs, Vincents, and other top-tier marques. Somer is a prime example of the expertise that SCM editors require of their writers. It was an honor to face off against Somer Hooker.

This exercise was to debate the merits of four recent auction outcomes at Bring a Trailer. We each selected two open cars that hammered at $20,000 or less. Each car represents a good value in its own right; however, they are all very different vehicles. We independently wrote about our own car choices and that of our opponent.

See below for the Somer/Richter Double Take face off in the January 2021 issue of Sports Car Market.

This was a fun article to do. One bit of a correction. I don’t do restorations. If I did they would win, The Concours d’ Lemons……Kudos to SCM for keeping it “fresh”.

    Philip,

Thank you for sharing. You two do Dan Akroyd and Jane Curtin from SNL’s point/counterpoint credit.

    Keep up the good work!
